Hey ya’ll. Happy new year, and welcome to the blog, i hope you’ve all had a smooth transition into the new year. So, have you ever gone through a time where you feel hydrated, skin is glowing, you’re minding your business and living your best life?. All of a sudden you start breaking out, feeling stressed and skin issues start popping up out of nowhere? If you can relate keep on reading. So 2017 was the year that i graduated from university. My skin was generally okay at first, apart from a little bit of dryness, i was all gucci 😀 ( or so thought 😦 ). Right up until it was time to submit our final bachelor thesis. The days leading up to the deadline were the worst. I have in the past experienced breakouts here and there, but nothing as bad as this. I’ve never had acne before, and so i didn’t know what it looked / felt like. A few weeks went by and these zits where getting bigger and were painful, and not disappearing as i was hoping for. The breakouts mainly covered my cheeks and a little bit on my T-zone area.
I didn’t think much of it, as i was so focused on finishing my last exam and thought it was all probably due to my poor eating habits, and not drinking enough water, around that time. So i started switching out my regular cleanser and tried a few DIY masks, oil cleansing methods (which was the worst ever idea), all while i was stressed out finishing this darn BA. I wasn’t noticing any changes. It felt more like it was getting worse.
So about a month later, i had finally graduated and now had the time to really give my skin the attention it was craving. I started googling “Acne on darkskin”, as i had never experienced this and i had no idea what it would appear like. Sure enough i found a picture that really resembled my breakouts. Completely panicking, i went to go see my doctor who confirmed the acne and referred me to a dermatologist, who gave me a prescription of Skinoren, an acne treatment cream with Azelaic acid, and told me to stay away from oils and stick to oil-free products all around.
The Azelaic acid apparently kills the bacteria associated with acne, that feeds on sebum produced in the skin. This then produces waste products and fatty acids that irritate the sebaceous glands, making them inflamed and causing spots, and making me a very unhappy gal 😥
So a few months went by, and the Skinoren had thankfully calmed down the worst of the acne. But i was still subconscious, and was now dealing with the acne scars. I tried a bunch of different products, making my skin sensitive and DRY. I felt like i had tried all types of products, spent all of my coin and was losing hope. Until one day i was at the drugstore and casually picked up a bottle of pure 100 % tea tree oil.
Thinking that i had nothing to lose, i started applying the tea tree oil twice a day all over the effected areas of my face, and eliminated all other products apart from moisturizer. Oh man, when i tell you how repulsive the scent of the tea tree oil was 😮 I mean if eucalyptus and peppermint oil had a baby, it would be tea tree oil, and i just could not stand it, but as they say, no pain, no gain right?
Anyways a month later i had noticed a major difference with my skin. The scars were starting to slowly fade and i had minimal breakout. Although i was told to stay away from oils, i still took a risk with this one being an essential oil. It wasn’t greasy and was quickly absorbed after application. I also got used to the scent and wasn’t bothered by it at all Alhamdulilah. The dryness wasn’t as apparent either. Although i did purchase a hyaluronic acid serum, to combat the dry skin, the tree oil also helped with the initial patching of the skin, and man i was happy again 😀 .
Below is a picture of my progress – there’s approximately 6 months between the two pics.
6 months later
I can’t believe that i’ve finally found something that worked for my skin. I remember searching, reading about and trying literally 100’s of different expensive products, and not finding anything that would work. And i learnt that just because a product works for someone doesn’t mean that it will work for me, and vice versa.
If you’ve ever had acne, you’d know how much it can affect your self-esteem and the stress of working on clearing your skin, leading to more breakouts aarrghh!!!. ._. :s
Tea tree oil has really been a life saver, and i’m about to empty my 3rd bottle. I was religiously using it for 4 months straight and have stopped using it after the amazing results. I do however still apply it at times when i get the occasional breakout here and there, and i also still have scars that need fading. As mentioned above my skincare is still under construction, and i have added a few more steps to keep it as clear as i can, that i’ll share in another post. But as of now i’m taking it slow and enjoying pampering my skin. I still have a long way to go, but i’m proud of the progress, and skincare is now part of my daily routine that i ENJOY.
If you’ve read thus far, thank you sooo much. I hope it has benefited you in some way if you’re going through something similar. Everybody deserves clear and glowy skin, and if you haven’t found that specific product, keep searching. It’s out there somewhere.
Also if you’ve been inspired to try out tea tree oil and it’s your first time doing so, please be mindful of it’s power. If you have sensitive skin, try diluting it with your other products, or do a patch test first to be safe.
What has worked for you, and what skincare product is your fave? Comment below and let me know, so we can inspire each other . Until next time, Salaam Which means PEACE.. 🙂
